VarnishGuard TM

The VarnishGuard™ is a fabric-covered plastic sheet that attaches safely to back of French polished classical guitars. It protects the varnish from moisture damage and scratching. The plastic core of the VarnishGuard™ blocks perspiration and the soft fabric covering prevents scratching. The VarnishGuard™ also provides a comfortable, “non-slip” point of contact between the guitar and the instrumentalist’s chest.

BACKGROUND OF THE VARNISHGUARD: Problem Solved: The VarnishGuard™ prevents French polish, or shellac, finishes from degrading due to body heat and perspiration while playing the instrument. Other improvised devices do not stop moisture and heat completely and instrument varnish inevitably begins to degrade with time and exposure. The plastic core of the VarnishGuard™ blocks moisture and the soft covering prevents scratching. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE VARNISHGUARD™ As stated above, the VarnishGuard™ prevents guitar varnish from degrading due to body heat and perspiration while playing the instrument. The VarnishGuard™ claimed here solves this problem. The VarnishGuard™ has a thin plastic sheet sandwiched between microfiber fabric and is attached to the back of the guitar with self-adhesive Velcro discs and static-cling vinyl. From my research there is no comparable product on the market. Currently instrumentalists drape a cloth over the guitar which does not block moisture well. Fabric alone, such as a polishing cloth draped over the instrument is porous and allows perspiration to degrade the shellac-based finishes of high-end acoustic guitars. The plastic core of the VarnishGuard™ blocks moisture and the soft covering prevents scratching. This Version of The VarnishGuard™ Discussed Here Includes: 1) .020 inch thick craft plastic. 2) Microfiber fabric. 3) Static cling vinyl. 4) Spray adhesive . 5) Velcro disks or 'coins'. Relationship Between The Components: The microfiber fabric is attached to the plastic moisture barrier front and back with spray adhesive and the covered 'shield' is attached to the back of the guitar with self-adhesive Velcro coins and static cling vinyl. The vinyl discs cling to the glossy surface of the guitar back, and one Velcro “hook and “loop”, self-adhesive ‘coin’ on each vinyl disk attaches to the fabric-covered plastic sheet. How The VarnishGuard™ Works: The microfiber fabric provides scratch protection for the instrument and a comfortable ‘point of contact’ to the instrumentalist’s chest. The plastic core creates a moisture barrier, protecting the shellac finish of high-end acoustic guitars from damage due to contact with perspiration and body heat. Spray adhesive binds the microfiber fabric to the plastic core front and back. Static cling vinyl attaches directly to the guitar and provides a safe 'platform' for attaching the 'shield' to the guitar via self-adhesive Velcro disks, also referred to as 'coins' or ‘buttons’. How To Use The VarnishGuard™. This is a very simple device: The user removes the paper backing from the vinyl disks and presses the VarnishGuard™ to the upper-forward quadrant of the back of the instrument. The disks adhere safely to the glossy varnish of the guitar. The shield may be removed from the guitar back by separating the Velcro ‘hook’ and ‘loop’ coins. The vinyl 'mounts' remain attached to the guitar and can be peeled off separately to remove them. The shape of the guard makes it obvious where it is placed in the upper forward quadrant of the back of the instrument where the user knows varnish degradation takes place.
