Assisted living facilities, airports, hospitals and anyone who uses or cares for someone who uses a wheelchair will appreciate the increased safety that this invention provides.
Wheelchair Brake and Attachment Bracket is an apparatus that allows users to bring wheelchairs to a halt faster. The invention may work much like a bike brake. A metal bracket measuring 3/4” thick and 2” wide mounts on the wheelchair so that the brake calipers hover over one of the wheels. A linear slick brake cable connects the calipers to a lever that is mounted on the wheelchair’s handle. When a user pulls the lever, the calipers press together against the wheel, bringing the wheelchair to a halt.
When an inexperienced individual pushes a friend or loved one around in a wheelchair, he or she may find it difficult to stop the chair once momentum has built up. The person may lose his or her grip while trying to pull back on the handles and the person in the wheelchair may be suddenly thrust into a dangerous situation. Also, a person sitting in a wheelchair that has not been positioned correctly may also accidentally roll the wrong way, creating another hazard. A cost-effective solution is necessary for bringing wheelchairs safely to a stop.
