According to a study by the research firm Colloquy, the number of U.S. loyalty program memberships grew by 26.7% from 2010 to 2012. Last year, Americans had a collective total of 2.65 billion loyalty program memberships. The average american household has around 10 loyalty cards. There are many reasons why technology hasn't made these obsolete (and maybe never will). In the meantime, the cards may as well stay private and tidy.
The obvious evolution of technology would be to have all the systems interface so that one card (my id card) can be used to access the appropriate program for the store. This will likely never happen due to 'big brother' issues and privacy groups. This would allow all of a person's data to be accessed from a single source. The NSA efforts at phone records are an indicator of where this could go quickly. The public won't stand for this.
On the contrary, several cards can get smaller with technology (drivers licenses, insurance cards, door access cards). As almost any device can read the data from them when needed. A picture can come up on anyone’s smartphone when a license is read. These things can be a problem if stored on an electronic device (that requires power). Dead Batteries suddenly make you unknowable.
Currently the end users are the people that have a keychain and either buy groceries, hardware, building supplies, go to the gym, check out library books, have usb devices, etc and want to enclose them for security or protection reasons.
Key Cards will not get mangled or unsightly next to your favorite BMW car key.
You don't have to hand your smart phone over to the cashier so they can scan it.
You don't have to read your phone number out to the cashier in front of strangers. This is particularly troubling to attractive females. Some would rather pay extra for their groceries than do this.
